Young Bruins Fall to an Experienced Detroit team 3-1 on Monday Night
By: Mike Grinnell
The Boston Bruins fell to the Detroit Red Wings Monday night for their first loss of the preseason. A number of youngsters, Austin Czarnik, Frank Vatrano and Linus Arnesson, got their chance to show the Bruins what they were made of on Monday night, as did Tuukka Rask, who played in his first preseason game of the season.
“Good to get it out of the way. You kind of forget how tough it is out there. It doesn’t matter how much you workout or skate, it’s always different when it’s a real game and I definitely felt it. It’s good to get that first one out of the belt and to keep moving on that.” Said Rask after Monday nights loss.
“I think at this point I focus on myself and getting my game where I feel like it needs to be – it’s just with the feel and everything. Today I felt that timing was sometimes a little off, angles were a little off at times – not natural all the time. Those are the things I need to work on, but I think in the bigger picture too, looking at the breakouts we did a pretty good job today and communication was pretty good too.”
The group who played in front of Rask on Monday night, wasn’t the most experienced group ever, Torey Krug (160 games played), Zach Trotman( 29 games played), Kevan Miller (88 games played), Joe Morrow(15 games played), Colin Miller (0 games played), Linus Arnesson (0 games played).
The communication between the young group of defensemen and Rask needs to be impeccable this season. “The first period I had to handle it a couple times, the first one of the game I just made a bad pass, but after that I made a couple good passes. A couple guys talked to me where they wanted the puck to be and I think they did a good job in front of the net, clearing some sticks and some players. I think it was good”
The Red Wings were led by goals from Drew Miller, who scored off a nice wrister from the right circle, Tomas Jurco added another when he took advantage of a change that left two left handed defensemen, Morrow and Arnesson on the ice. Andreas Athanasiou added the final tally from the point, as Jurco and Krug were battling in front.
With 50.7 seconds left in regulation the Bruins got on the board, on the PP, by a rebound goal from Loui Eriksson after a bomb from the point from Colin Miller, who looked phenomenal, in the preseason loss.
With opening night only 9 days away, there are still some questions surrounding this Bruins team. From defense to back up goalie, a lot more questions will be answered in the next week.
