RIVER HAWK HOCKEY SHUTS OUT RENSSELAER ON OPENING NIGHT, 3-0

LOWELL, Mass. – Junior forward Evan Campbell (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) posted two points (1g,1a), as the UMass Lowell Hockey team registered a 3-0 shutout against ECAC foe Rensselaer in its season opener on Friday night at the Tsongas Center in front of 5,786 fans.

With tonight’s victory UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin recorded his 100th career win at the helm of the River Hawks, his record now stands at 100-47-13 in his fifth season as head coach. Bazin becomes the fastest head coach in River Hawk program history to reach 100 wins and he is the third coach in team history to reach the 100-win mark.

Sophomore forward Michael Louria (Wexford, Pa.) opened the scoring at 4:03 of the first period, collecting a loose puck off the opposing goaltender’s pads following a shot from Campbell. Campbell then extended the UMass Lowell lead to 2-0 at 19:27 of the opening period on an unassisted goal.

The River Hawks continued to attack coming out of the first intermission, and got on the board again just 2:06 into the second period thanks to senior forward Adam Chapie (Oxford, Mich.), who found the back of the net on a pass from freshman forward Nick Master (Broomall, Pa.). The assist marked Masters’ first career point.

In the third period the Engineers threatened to foil the blank sheet, taking a 13-7 shot advantage, but senior goaltender Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.) finished the game unscathed to collect his fourth career shutout. He totaled 27 stops on the night.

The River Hawks outshot the Engineers, 38-27, in the contest in addition to taking a 47-27 edge (64%) in faceoffs.

Friday’s contest marked the 23rd meeting between UMass Lowell and Rensselaer. The River Hawks now own a 12-10-1 advantage in the all-time series. UMass Lowell returns to action Friday, October 16th when they host Colorado College at 7:15 p.m. on ‘Jacquie Moloney Night” at the Tsongas Center.
