The New England Patriots dropped to 12-3 on the season with an overtime loss to the New York Jets 26-20. The loss has the Patriots waiting another week to attempt to clinch home field advantage through the playoffs. A trip to Miami to win in January is never easy, no matter how good or bad the Dolphins are. The loss also dropped the Patriots to 2-3 in their last three games.
The Patriots looked out of sync all day on offense. Without Danny Amendola the Patriots offense again looked bad and down right terrible at times. The right decision was made to rest Amendola though, as the only way the Patriots have a chance to advance to the Super Bowl and win would be to get Danny and Julian Edleman on the field. The Patriots are not a dynamic offense with Brandon LaFell (1 catch 19 yards) and Keshawn Martin (7 catches 68 yards) as their top two receivers.
The Patriots defense may have given up 26 and allowed the Jets to win in over time, but despite that the defense kept the Patriots in the game. Until the final drive for the Patriots the defense had outscored the offense 7-6. This was another game where the defense made plays. The strip sack of Ryan Fitzpatrick by Jabaal Sheard, that was returned for a score by Jamie Collins was a game changer. The play changed momentum in the game. Sheard has been a great signing and his presence on the field truly allows the Patriots front seven to be dynamic.
What the loss means for the Patriots.
With the loss the Patriots still hold the number one seed in the playoffs. To lock up the one seed the Patriots need to win next week against the Dolphins, or have the Bengals and Broncos each go 1-1 down the over the next two games. The teams play each other Monday night.
What the win means for the Jets.
The Jets with the win, now hold their playoff destiny in their hands. A win against Buffalo next week clinches a playoff spot for the Jets with the Steelers’ loss today against the Ravens.
The Patriots also lost starting tackle Sebastian Volmer to a leg injury earlier in the game. The injuries continue to mount for the Patriots. No news has been released on Volmer as of yet
