Bruins, Loui Eriksson in Preliminary Contract Discussions.

By:Mike Grinnell

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger and ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, The Boston Bruins and forward Loui Eriksson have engaged in preliminary contract discussions.

An unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, Eriksson is on pace for his best season yet as a Bruin. Eriksson is 3rd on the team in goals with 15, behind Brad Marchand (17) and Patrice Bergeron (18), second on the team in points with 37, and has been a crucial piece for the Bruins power play, which ranks 3rd in the NHL.

Eriksson, acquired in the 2013 trade that sent Tyler Seguin to Dallas, hasn’t been what Bruins fans expected.

Before Boston

08-09 -82 games played 36-42-63

09-10 – 82 games played 29-42-71

10-11 – 79 games played 27-46-73

11-12 – 82 games played 26-45-71

12-13 – 48 games played 12-17-29 (Lockout)

In Boston

13-14 – 61 games played 10-27-37

14-15 – 81 games played 22-25-47

15-16 – 45 games played 15-23-38

While Eriksson hasn’t stood out in his time in Boston, like Seguin has in Dallas, when Eriksson is on the ice, he has been one of the Bruins most productive players.

Eriksson, who is on pace for his first 30 goal season since 08-09, will be a hot commodity at the Feb. 29th trade deadline, in which I previously wrote, that the Bruins should look to part ways with the Swedish forward.

The Bruins desperately need defense help and there are a lot of teams out there, particularly out west, that need some of what Loui has to offer, consistent offense.

If the Bruins fail to lock up Eriksson before the Feb. 29th deadline, look for Don Sweeney and Co. to trade the former 2nd round pick, to better prepare for the future.
